Garrin Fraze - G. Fraze Horology
Hi, I’m Garrin.
Ever since I was a kid, I have been fascinated by watches and watchmaking. My grandfather, a collector of American pocket watches, sparked my interest from a young age. I was always asking him to see his watches, and loved watching the seconds tick away as the balance wheel oscillated forth and back. One day, he gave me a watch of my own; a 15 jewel Waltham from the early 1900s. From that day forward, I knew what I wanted to do with my life: I wanted to be a watchmaker.
Fast forward to 2018, and I had started my journey, attending the watchmaking program at Paris Junior College Texas in Paris, Texas. There, I learned everything I could about watchmaking from Stanley McMahan, who I am lucky to consider a friend and mentor to this day. With Stanley’s guidance, I developed a strong foundation of watchmaking skills, and took those skills to Haltom’s Jewelers in Fort Worth, Texas. There, I began my career, working as an in-house watchmaker servicing luxury watches. I gained experience and had the opportunity to attend brand-specific trainings to continue developing my skillset.
After some time, I felt that I had reached a ceiling and was ready to move on to the next steps in my career. I wanted to find a position that would allow me to continue to learn and grow while giving back to the watchmaking industry. It was around this time that Stanley McMahan called and told me that he was retiring from a long and fruitful career as a horological educator, and that he wanted me to take over the watchmaking program at PJC. I was honored. After considering this opportunity and comparing it with others that were available to me, I determined that I would be hard pressed to find a better opportunity to meet my goals.
Enough about me. Let’s talk about G. Fraze Horology.
What is G. Fraze Horology?
G. Fraze Horology is a business I started so I could build community, maintain my skills, and broaden the scope of my experience as a watchmaker. In my full-time position as an educator, I am so busy with the responsibilities of running the PJC horology program, that I hardly have time to work on watches aside from demonstrations for the students. Furthermore, with my professional experience being limited to the after-sales luxury side of the industry, I wanted to gain experience on a wider variety of watches, with an emphasis on vintage and antique service and repair.
Another purpose of G. Fraze Horology is community. If you’re here, you likely found me from my social media presence, primarily on Instagram and YouTube. Here, in the blog section of this website, you can keep up with my journey and connect with other members of my community. It is my goal to foster a fun, educational environment around my content and brand. I can’t wait to connect with you!
This is just the beginning! Who knows where G. Fraze Horology will go from here?
